Filmed intermittently in Japan over a period of ten years, Hanabi is a savage adaptation of Yoko Hayasuke’s Journal of a Radioactive Brain, written in the wake of the tsunami and nuclear disaster that ensued the Tohoku earthquake. Hayasuke’s first-person account of the micropolitical consequences of the disaster is woven with a tapestry of tales survival and resistance from communities who already seem to inhabit a collapsed world: resilient beekeepers, caring marine biologists, workers of radioactive de-contamination, utopian gardeners and radiophobics populate this insurgent constellation.
